CACTUS Cowboys in paradise

Finally the Wild West CACTI will have their shoot out.

This is the part of the afternoon CACTUS challenge we didn't pull off on the CYCLE trail.
So we're moseying on out to Milltown behind lake Kaniere to Cowboy Paradise where Mike Milne is going to put us through the ropes and we can practice some gun slinging.

"Sudden" (Mike) does the firearms license testing for the police in Westland so we're in good hands!

TIME AND PLACE:
Pick up from High School carpark 3:30 Monday 7th.

BRING:

  • Warm enough clothes and a rain jacket if poss.
  • Beanie is probably a good idea if it blows up a westerly - it could be cold.
  • CACTUS T-shirt. A camera if you have one.
  • Some meat to throw on the Barbie.

Shouldn't be too late back.

We don't really have time to get a Permission form out before Mon so make sure your parents understand what we are doing and that you have their permission.
Cowboy Paradise is an established tourism business as well as home to many local club members.

CACTUS WILDERNESS CYCLE CHALLENGE

Awesome effort by our 8 intrepid CACTI. Taking on 55 km of gravel road, bush and track from Kumara to Kaniere!

John Winsley, Corbin Dickens, Time Boon, Matt Boon, Rory Morgan, Andrew Lee, Elle Clark and Sophie Clark mounted their bikes for this event. 7 am to 7pm with little pre-event cycle training!
Despite drizzle for most of the day this was a awesome event to test the deter-mination, attitudes and teamwork of these awesome young CACTI! Endurance on the road sections, nerve and skill on the more technical parts like the Kaniere Water Race Track, along with route finding, fording streams and team running through the Kawhaka river section brought the youth through with flying colours. Thanks to Paul Schram from Wild West Adventures for lending the bikes, Rhys Martin for driving the support vehicle and the land owners who allowed us through. The trail will be a wonderful asset to Westland. And biggest thanks of all to the CACTI for fronting up for the challenge, supporting and encouraging each other through the day and making it a great event!

WETA on the TAIPO

Despite all efforts the Whataroa was not to be... but plan B was an awesome night and day. Ascending at night from Kelly's Creek to Carroll Hut to camp the night above 1000m in tents with the milky way spread above us. A morning traverse across Kelly's Range to descend to the Taipo at 7 mile creek. Rafting out with Wild West Adventure Company. Paul, Sebastian and the lads put on an awesome day for us bartering with gigantic gold nuggets for their services, crossing the river by rope, rafting and inflatable kayaking down the Taipo and swimming the last rapid to end the journey at the highway. We still can't agree who finished with the most gold and won another adventure...perhaps we'll all have to go... (Right Paul?) Pics to come and be added to over the next few days...Keep checking out the blog.
Awesome CACTI!
